Getting the squares to line up as the basket curves outward from a flat base takes real planning before the first coil is even laid — a mistake early on throws off the whole pattern by the time it reaches the rim.

A Pattern That Has to Be Planned, Not Just Woven

A solid-color or simple-stripe basket can be corrected as you go. A checkerboard can't — the weaver has to count and plan the color changes from the base up, since the squares have to keep lining up as the basket widens and curves.
